Letter to All Employees

Feb 20

To all employees, of any company, in any industry, whether you work for yourself or for someone else:

I would like to ask you to join me in changing the world.

Yes, that is a very bold statement, but before you hit the back button on your browser please give me a moment to explain.

For READ(here), I have just finished reading Linchpin by Seth Godin.  There are certain books that change your perception of the world, rock your core, hit home, Linchpin did that for me.

I have worked in various jobs since I was fourteen years old.  Seven of those years in the restaurant industry, 2 years in a pharmacy and now a year and a half in the
cellular industry in a retail store.  Needless to say, they have not been my dream jobs but consequences of circumstances some of my own choosing and others out of my control.

In my current and previous places of employment, I have repeatedly made the statement that ”I hate my job,” “I can’t wait to get out and find something
better.”  I felt like a “cog in a machine.” Then I read Linchpin, and my attitude completely changed.

I am an aspiring entrepreneur and that’s the mentality I take to work with me everyday.  I do not let the big shadow of Corporate America, or upper management make me feel like “just an employee.”  I have made the decision to become “indispensable.”

When I walk in to work, I now understand that I work for myself.  My work station/cubicle is my own business.  The inventory is provided for me, I don’t have to worry about overhead costs, supply chain management, accounting principles and other business worries.

The only thing I have to worry about is the customer in front of me, the project assigned to me or the report I must finish.  In these seemingly simple, easy tasks, I ”create art.”  I try to “change people with my art.”  Every interaction is a chance for me to excel, to show my passion, to make someone’s life easier.  Yes, at the end of the day when you clock-out or leave the office its the companies logo at the top, but whose name is at the bottom?  Whose name is the email from?  When the customer leaves whose name will they remember that works for that company?

So fellow employees of any company, in any industry, whether you work for yourself or for someone else, join me in changing the world.  Let’s remove the veil covering how important our input really is and make the world a better place, one project at a time, one report at a time and one customer interaction at a time.

Sincerely yours,

- Fellow employee

I'm on board, I'm joining you. let's move forward and change the world.
I have said ” I teach myself to like my job” I have a passion to help people, and that is why it does not matter what I do, I find a way to link my job to my passion.
Let's change the world, let's all be artists.

    Very powerful words indeed!
I have joined your army in changing the world on January 7, 2010, when I decided to quit my job and follow my passion. You and I share the same history of not feeling satisfied or fulfilled in our jobs. I too have changed around 6 different jobs in less than 10 years, to many that sounds crazy, but I was trying to find my calling. I haven't read Godin's Linchpin yet, but it was Gary Vaynerchuk's Crush It that inspired me to take corrective action.
As you wrote in your post, you have to change your attitude and believe in what you're doing and the value you're offering. From the guy who brings coffee in the morning up to the CEO, we are all indispensable, but it starts in how we carry ourselves in what we do. Passion is the key to success, without it, you're just a number!
I join my voice to yours in the hope that people will revolt not against the system, but against themselves.

  • MouyyadA

Thank you Luay, I “teach myself to like my job,” and you are right you can help people no matter what you do!

  • MouyyadA

I love that, “not against the system but against themselves.”

great post! I never really looked at having a job in this way, although I did notice when working in a restaurant that people would eagerly come in and talk with me as I had developed a relationship with them through me being a waiter for them.

I know that quite a few people came into the restaurant I was working in to have me serve them and I really love the fact that this is true in any business.

I haven't had a chance to read Linchpin yet but Seth Godin is great at teaching us about success in ways that we might have overlooked otherwise.

Changing people is a great goal to shoot for everyday and making the change for the better is a great feeling!

    Keep it up bro,
    Chris

Waiting tables is a classic example, your station is your small business. Linchpin is a great book. Thanks for the support Chris.

Great post! I am inspired by your resolve, and your call to action. As someone who also just finished Linchpin, I have many of the same feelings inside. Thank you for writing them down.

Cheers to THIS, Mouyyad! Well, you already know where I stand in regard to following one's passion.

I like this: “Every interaction is a chance for me to excel, to show my passion, to make someone’s life easier.” Those are wise words for anyone to put into practice.

    Really enjoyed this.

  • MouyyadA

Thank you for the support Cali.
